How is infrared used in medicine?
Infrared cameras are used to detect breast cancer or deep vein thrombosis. Ear thermometers use infared radiation.
What are the non-medical uses of Infared radiation
Night vision cameras to spot criminals
Finding people in smoke or collapsed buildings ( eg. Fires, earthquakes)
Infared astronomy - infared radiation can pass through dust, eg. In a nebula
Why should we protect ourselves from ultraviolet radiation ?
It can cause skin cancer
What are non-Medical uses of ultraviolet radiation
Some chemical substances absorbs ultraviolet radiation and then golw (fluoresce). these are called fluorescent chemicals. fluorescent chemicals are used to make security markings on banknotes. Ultra violet radiation is shown onto the note, the markings can be seen. Forged notes won’t have the marks so this helps us tell whether that was forged or not.
What is the medical uses of ultraviolet radiation ?
Ultraviolet interest in medicine to treat certain skin conditions, such as psoriasis. regular treatment can stop the skin scaling so much. ultraviolet radiation is also used to treat people who don’t have enough vitamin D in the body
How are x-rays detected?
X-rays are detected by photograhic film. The x-rays make the film go black.
What is the medical use of X-ray radiation?
X-rays are use the medicine to detect broken bones. X-rays from machine are sent into the body and detected by photographic film on the other side.
Why should we not have too many X-rays?
It shows can damage living cells in our bodies. This is my extra staff where lead aprons

X-rays are also used to detect metal objects in luggage at airports. X-rays are used in astronomy as some objects in space give out x-rays.X-rays are used in industry to check the metal parts have been welded together properly and are not cracked. the metal parts are x-rayed and any gaps or cracks are show up in the photograph
Where do we get Gamma radiation from
We get gamma radiation from natural sources such as rocks, commic rays and food this is called background radiation
What absorbs Gamma radiation ?
Lead
Why are Gamma rays dangerous?
They can damage or kill living cells
How can we protect ourselves from Gamma Rays?
Use tongs to handle sources of Gamma rays
Don’t point sources of Gamma rays towards people
Store sources of Gamma rays in lead box’s
What is Gamma rays used for?
A source of Gamma radiation can be used as a tracer this means that its journey can be followed by detecting the Gamma rays coming from it using a special camera
In industry tracer are used to help find leaks in water pipes. The tracer is added to water then followed as it goes down the drain and into the sewage pipe
