Chapter 1- Cells Flashcards
Organism
A living thing
Eyepiece lens
The very top lens that you put your eye to in a microscope.
Mitochondria
A organelle that produces energy for the cell to live. It is also where respiration happens when energy is released from food
Passive process
A process that does not require any energy.
Diffusion
When particles collide into each other to create a mist
Stage
An area of the microscope where you place the glass slide
Nucleus
The organelle that controls the cell and stores Dna.
Cytoplasm
The area in the cell where chemical reactions take place. It is a jelly inside the cell.
Living thing
An organism
Cell wall
The outside of the cell that lets everything in. It gives structure for the plant.
Cell
The building block of live- every living thing in the world is made of this
Cell memebrane
The layer around the cell that acts like a barrier
Special cell adaptation
When a cell adapts to be better at its job
Permanent vacoule
It stores food called cell sap. It is a large area in a plant cell.
Chloroplast
Found in plant cells and some unicellular organisms. Traps sunlight energy to create photosynthesis.
Hazard symbols
Symbols that help you understand what danger some object might pose.
Maximum magnification
The highest power of zoom you can put on a microscope- x400
Binary fission
Binary fission is when a cell reproduces making an identical second copy of itself.
Coarse focus wheel
The coarse focus wheel is used to get a first focus on your specimen.
Fine focus wheel
Once you have adjusted with the coarse focus wheel, you can make the focus finer with the fine focus wheel.
Sperm cell adaptation
It has a long flagellum and a head like a blunt spearhead
Objective lens
The lens that you can regulate the zoom of; the zoom depends on the quality of the microscope.
