Chapter 1: Intro To Body Functions Flashcards
(34 cards)
Abdominopelvic quadrants
Right upper quadrant (RUQ), left upper quadrant (LUQ), right lower quadrant (RLQ), left lower quandrant (LLQ)
Abdominopelvic regions
Right hypochondriac, epigastric, left hypochondriac, right lumbar, umbilical, left lumbar, right iliac, hypogastric, left iliac
Anatomical position
The body is erect, facing forward, with the upper limbs at their sides, palms forward. Right and left refer to that of the person in anatomical position
Anatomy
Branch of science dealing with the form and structure of body parts
Atrophy
Waste away, typically due to the degeneration of cells, or become vestigial during evolution.
Cavities
Organized into the axial and appendicular cavities, within the axial portion are the cranial, vertebral, thoracic, and abdominopelvic cavities.
Control center
Otherwise known as the set points, the specific value certain things within the human body should be.
Superior
A body part is above another
Inferior
A body part is below another
Anterior
Towards the front
Posterior
Towards the back
Ventral
The front of the body in reference to the cavities
Dorsal
The back of the body when referring to the cavities
Medial
Closer to the midline
Lateral
Towards the sign, away from the midline
Proximal
Refers to being closer to a point of reference than another thing (ex: the wrist is proximal to the elbow)
Distal
Farther away from a point of attachment than something else (ex: the fingers are distal to the elbow)
Superficial
Situated near the surface
Deep
More internal than superficial
Effector loop
A number of self regulating control systems
Feedback
Can be negative or positive, works to correct wrongs in the set points in your body.
Homeostasis
The condition of a stable, internal environment
Mediastinum
Separates the thoracic cavity into two compartments, which contain the right and left lung
Negative feedback
When the deviation from the set point is corrected, and because the action of the effects is reduced
