Chapter 2: Cells And Tissue Flashcards
(22 cards)
Adipose Tissue
Tissue that store fat
Areolar Connective Tissue
Connective tissue composed mostly of fibers
Atrophy
A partial or complete wasting away of a part of the body
Axon
A nerve fiber that conducts an impulse away from the neuron cell body
Chondrocyte
A cartilage cell
Collagen
White fiber consisting of the protein collagen, common in connective tissue, including bone matrix
Connective Tissue
Basic type of tissue that consists of cells within an extracellular matrix, including bone, tissue, and blood
Dendrite
Process of a neuron that receives input from other neurons
Endocrine
Gland that secretes hormones directly in to the blood
Epithelial Tissue
Tissue that covers all external and lines all internal body surfaces. Varieties are classified by cell shape( squamous, cuboidal, and columnar) and number of layers(simple, stratified, or psuedostratified)
Exocrine
Gland that secretes its products into ducts or onto an outside body surface
Gland
An aggregation of cells specialized to secrete or excrete materials not related to their ordinary metabolic needs
Glia
Are non-neuronal cells that maintain homeostasis, form myelin, and provide support and protection for neurons in the central and peripheral nervous systems
Goblet Cell
Epithelial cell specialized to secrete mucus in the respiratory tract and intestines
Hypertrophy
Hypertrophy is the increase in the volume of an organ or tissue due to the enlargement of its component cells
Matrix
Connective tissue consists of cells and extracellular fibers in a liquid called ground substance
Mitosis
Division of a somatic cell, forming two generally identical somatic cells
Neuron
Nerve cell
Osteon
Cylinder-shaped unit containing bone cells that surround a central canal; haversian system
Squamous
Thin, flat cells that look like fish scales, and are found in the tissue that forms the surface of the skin, the lining of the hollow organs of the body, and the lining of the respiratory and digestive tracts.
Cancer
A disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissue.
Cystic Fibrosis
An inherited life-threatening disorder that damages the lungs and digestive system, where emus us blocks the airways
