Chapter 1 Levels of organization Flashcards
Biology
study of living things
what are the levels of organization from smallest to largest?
Atom, molecule, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, multi-celled organism, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere
what is an atom
the smallest whole unit of matter
what is a molecule
a bonding of 2 or more atoms that forms a new substance
what is a cell
the smallest whole unit of life
what is tissue
a group of related cells that perform a body function
what is an organ
an enclosed structure made of multiple tissue types that help complete a task
what is an organ system
a series of related organs that complete a series of body tasks from start to finish
what is a multi-celled organism
has multiple cell types or tissues
what is a population
all members of the SAME organism in a given area
what is a community
all of the living things in that same area
what is an ecosystem
the community and its abiotic (non living) components
what is a biosphere
the entire Earth that can be broken into 3 zones based on the main abiotic factor
what are the 3 zones in a biosphere
lithosphere (soil and rock)
hydrosphere (water)
atmosphere (air)
what is the current taxonomic system from lowest to highest
species, genus, family, order, class, phylum, kingdom, domain
