Chapter 1 - Rays Flashcards

1
Q

What is a conductor?

What is a an insulator?

A

A conductor is the process of electrical charge being able to go from one object to another. Example: Metal.
An insulator is when electrical current can’t pass to other objects. Example: wood

Q

What is conduction?
What is convection?
What is radiation?

A

Conduction is the transfer of heat of object to another. This caused by temperature difference between both objects.
Convection is the transfer of heat energy moving in liquid.
Radiation is the process in which heat energy is transmitted from a body or object to another. They travel through space.

Q

What is static electricity?

A

Static electricity is when an object becomes positive. This means when for example: an atom from group 1 reacts and it looses it’s electron in the outer shell. This atom will become positive. In the periodic table it shows you the amount of of an electron, protons and neutrons. The atomic number presents the number of protons and electrons. When Hydrogen (Group 1 element) reacts it will have less electrons than protons so the atom becomes from being neutral to positive. When you rub your hair against a balloon, the balloon will be positive so when you put it closer to some pieces of paper, the paper will get stuck against the balloon. Because as the ballon is positive by rubbing it against your hair. The magnetic fields theory is that + and - should attract like North and South.

Q

What is Induction and Induction charge?

A

Induction is the process of charging a neutral object which the charged object that are NOT in contact with each other.

Induction charge is the resultant charge that occur through induction
Neutral are composed of the same amount of + than -.

Q

What is Earthing and Discharged?

A

Earthing is the connection from the top of a building that is then connected to the ground by cables so that when there is lightning and it strikes, the the electrical charge will conduct into the ground. IT’S IS NOT AN INSULATOR.

Discharged is the release of a static charge through a conductor.
