Chapter 1 - Sensation And Perception Flashcards

1
Q

Define Sensation

A

Refers to the 5 senses. The process where our sensory organs or receptors receive information about the environment and transmit it to the brain

Q

Vision (sensation)
Reception
Transduction
Transmission

A

Reception - light enters the eye through the cornea, passes through the pupil, lens focuses light on the retina which contains roda and cones.

Transduction - light energy is converted to electrochemical nerve impulses and travels along the optic nerve to the brain.

Transmission - transmission occurs along the optic nerve from the retina to the brain

Q

Vision (perception)
Selection
Organization
Interpretation

A

Selection - pays attention to certain stimuli, image is broken up by feature detectors

Organisation - the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobes analyse incoming messages

Interpretation - the brain recognises the object/person as familiar. Eg. “is a Dalmatian dog”.

Q

Taste (sensation)
Reception
Transduction
Transmission

A

Reception - chemicals are dissolved in saliva in the process of chewing

Transduction - chemical energy is converted by the receptor cells on the tastebuds into electrochemical nerve impulses

Transmission - from the tastebuds the nerve impulses travel through the thalamus to the primary gustatory cortex low in the parietal lobe

Q

Taste (perception)

A

The brain recognises the sensation of a mixture of 5 primary tastes combined with the smell of the food, the colour and the texture we also perceive the flavour of what we eat.
