What is perceptual set?

A

A predisposition to perceive stimuli in a specific way, interpreting what we see according to certain preconceptions

Factors that influence perceptual set

A

Previous experience- eg. Ratman experiment. The same experience can be interpreted differently by different people

Context- refers to the environment in which a perceived stimulus is observed. Context sometimes has an immediate effect on our expectations

Perceptual constancies

A

Size constancy- refers to the fact that we maintain a constant perception of an objects size even if the object moves nearer or further away

Shape constancy- refers to the fact that we can interpret objects when viewed from any angle.
