Who was Kūkaʻilimoku and how does he relate to this chapter?

A

Kūkaʻilimoku was a war god. When Kamehamehaʻs uncle died, Kamehameha was charged with caring for the sacred god. This responsibility set him firmly on path to becoming a ruling chief. Later, when Kamehameha won the battle of Nuʻuanu, he killed and sacrificed Kalanikūpule (the Oʻahu chief) to Kūkaʻilimoku.

A

The Naha stone was used to identify who the next chief would be. When Kamehameha turned over the Naha Stone, his rival (for becoming high chief) Keaweokahikona, pledged his spear and men to Kamehameha. Kamehameha moving the stone also led the people to believing in him when he attempted to conquer all the islands.

A

At the time, it was prophesied that a great one would be born and end the ruling chiefs, unify the kingdoms, and bring peace. When Kamehameha was born, it was unclear wether he was going to be “the great one”, but eventually it was realized he would be the one.

A

Kamehameha was trained by Kekūhaupiʻo ( a renowned warrior), who helped Kamehameha become a highly skilled warrior with keen intellect for battle. Kamehameha was a great athlete, but he also got a good education where he learned astronomy, ethics, religious customs, navigation, farming, and fishing. This later helped him become cheif because of his knowledge and athletic abilities.

A

Kamehameha would often barter with foreigners, exchanging food and water for iron, weapons, and other foreign goods. He would also befriend some foreigners, and used their skills for his own purpose. With the good weapons and new skills of the foreigners, Kamehameha had a huge advantage over his opponents.

A

Kamehameha had foreign advisors that spoke Hawaiian, married Hawaiian women and had children with them. The foreign advisors gave him new ideas and tools, but Kamehameha made sure to root in Hawaiian traditions and practices of the culture and heritage while embracing the change.
