Chapter 1 Test Flashcards
Scientific method
An organized set of investigation procedures used by scientists.
Hypothesis
Educated guess or testable prediction.
Experiment
Organized procedure for testing hypotheses.
Control
Standard for comparison
Constant
Factor that does not vary in experiment.
Independent variable
Factor that is adjusted by the experimenter (x-axis)
Dependent variable
Factor whose value depends on the independent variable (y-axis)
Scientific law
Rule of that sums up related observations to describe a pattern in nature
Scientific theory
Experimentation based experiments - most logical explanation.
International system of units
Standard system of measurement world wide.
Mass
Amount of water in an object
Density
Mass per unit volume of a material
Time
Interval between two occurring events
Graph
A visual display of info or data
Line graph
Shows trends or how the data changes over time.
Circle graph
Used to show how a fixed quantity is broken down into parts
Exosphere
Uppermost region of atmosphere
Thermosphere
Temperatures go up as you go up; 4500 F
Mesosphere
The coldest temperatures of all the levels; -220 F
Meteorites burn up when they reach this level
Stratosphere
Jets fly in lower level
Contains ozone layer
No weather
Troposphere
The lowest level of earth’s atmosphere
Cryosphere
The ice of earth’s surface
Hydrosphere
The water on earth’s surface
Biosphere
The natures on earths surface
