Chapter 1: Themes in Biology and Scientific Inquiry Flashcards
(10 cards)
Differentiate between ecosystems and communities
Ecosystems: living+non-loving in an area
Communities: all living things in an area
What are organelles?
functional and structural components of a cell
What is a cell?
functional and structural fundamental unit of life. Also the smallest combination of molecules that can multiply autonomously in a stubble environment.
Levels of Organization order
Biosphere-> Ecosystems-> Communities-> Populations-> Organisms-> Organs-> Tissues-> Cells-> Organelles-> Molecules
The Scientific Method order
Observation-> Scientific question-> Hypothesis -> Prediction(pre test)-> Testing/experimentation with controls-> (first data analysis) Results-> Conclusion-> Theory
Are domains Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya genetically related and do they undergo natural selection?
- Yes(common ancestor), but domain Archaea and Eukarya are more closely related than any of them are to Bacteria.
- Also yes.
Bacteria and Archaea(proks): horizontal gene transfer
Eukarya:mutations
How does DNA encode information?
information is encoded in the sequence of nucleotides
Is it possible to test hypothesis without experimentation?
yes, like in the case of historical events
What’s an independent variable?
What’s a dependent variable?
