Chapter 10 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Mechanics
Branch of physics that studies the effect that forces have on bodies ad the motion produced by those forces
Biomechanics
Study of mechanics being applied to living things (the human body)
kinematics
Description of motion
Ex: shooting a basketball
Kinetics
Motion caused by a force
Ex: the ground pushing off you to propel you up to jump
Units of measurement (4)
Length
Mass
Weight
Time
Scalar Quantities
Single quantities, described by magnitude only (size or amount)
Ex: Mass (10lbs, 20kg)
Vector Quantities
Double quantities, describe by magnitude and direction
Ex: displacement (5m away from the starting point)
Vector Representation
Represented by an arrow
Direction and the magnitude is proportional to length of the arrow made
Vectors combined
Can be combined by addition, subtraction, and multiplication
- the new vector created is called the resultant
Looking at the displacement/resultant there are always how many component vectors. What direction do the vectors go and what angle to they always create?
Two
Horizontal and vertical
Right angle
