Chapter 10 - Review Of Human Systems Vocabulary Flashcards
(24 cards)
Auricles
The part of the external ear that protrudes from the head; aka pinna
Aqueous humor
The clear, watery fluid that circulates in the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye
Posterior chamber of eye is behind the iris in front of the lens
Bony labyrinth
Part of the inner ear; it contains the membranous labyrinth
Conjunctiva
A mucous membrane that covers the anterior of the eyeball and the lining of the eyelids
Eustachain Tube
The auditory canal; it extends from the middle ear to the nasopharynx; also known as auditory tube
Cilia
Small, hairlike process in the outer surfaces of some cells
External ear
The portion of the ear that includes the pinna and external auditory meatus; it terminates at ear drum
Includes external auditory canal
Inner ear
The part of the ear that contains the sensory organs for hearing and balance
Cornea
The convex, transparent, anterior part of the eye
Intraocular pressure
Pressure within the eye that keeps the eye inflated
Middle ear
An air-filled space in the temporal bone that contains the auditory ossicles
Lacrimal glands
The tear gland located in the superolateral corner of the orbit
Iris
The colored contractile membrane of the eye that can be seen through the cornea
Tympanic membrane
The cellular membrane that separates the external ear from the middle ear; also know as eardrum
Lens
The crystalline portion of the eye
Pupil
The opening in the center of the iris that regulates the amount of light entering the eye
Retina
The nervous tunic of the eye; it is continuous with the optic nerve
Oculomotor Nerve
The third cranial nerve, which contains sensory and motor fibers; it provides for movement of the muscles of the eye, for constriction of the pupil, and for accommodation of the eye to light
Vitreous Humor
The transparent, jellylike material that fills the space between the lens and retina
Optic Nerve
The second cranial nerve
The nerve that carries visual signals from the eye to the crossing of the optic tracts
Olfactory
The first cranial nerve
Of or pertaining to smell
Sclera
The opaque membrane covering the eye
The white of the eye
Vascular tunic
The choroid, ciliary body, and iris
Taste buds
The peripheral taste organs that are distributed over the tongue and roof of the mouth.
