biodiversity
short for “biological diversity” which refers to the number of different species in a given area
gene
a piece of DNA that codes for a specific trait that can be inherited by an organism’s offspring
keystone species
species that are clearly critical to functioning of an ecosystem
ecotourism
a form of tourism that supports the conversation and sustainable development of ecologically unique areas
endangered species
a species that is likely to become extinct if protective measures are not tsken immediately
threatened species
a species that is likely to become endangered if it is not protected
exotic species
a species that is not native to a particular rgeion
poaching
illegally hunting, fishing, harvesting, and trading of wildlife beyond the limit the laws give out
endemic species
species that are native to and fpund only within a limited area
germ plasm
any from of genetic material , such as that contained within the reproductive, or germ, cells of animlas and plants.
Endangered Species Act
passed in 1973 and amended several time since then; designed to protect plant and animal species in danger of extcitinction
habitat conservation plan
a compromise/ plan that attempts to protect one or more speices across large areas of land through trade-offs or cooperative aggreements
Biodiversity Treaty
An international agreement and an important result of the Earth Summit
