Chapter 10 Vocabulary Flashcards
(14 cards)
Atomic Mass
The number of grams of an element that is numerically equals to the atomic mass of the element in amu
Empirical Formula
The smallest whole number ratio of the atoms in a compound
Mole
The SI unit used to measure amount of substance
Molecular Formula
A chemical formula which shows the kinds and numbers of atoms present in a molecule of the compound
Molar volume
The volume occupied by a mole of any gas at STP
Molar Mass
The mass of a mole of any element or compound
Percent composition
The percent by mass of each element in a compound
STP
Zero degrees Celsius and 1 ATM
Representative Particle
Species present in a substance, usually atoms.
Avogadro Number
The number of representative particles of a substance present in 1 mole of that substance (6.02x10^23).
Representative Particles to Grams
Divide by 6.02x10^23 to get number of moles
Then multiply by molar mass to get number of grams.
Grams to moles
Divide the amount of grams by the molar mass to get number of moles.
Grams to representative particles
Divide number of grams by molar mass
Then multiply by (6.02x10^23) to get number of representative particles.
Percent composition
Mass of element in one mole/ molar mass of whole compound
Then multiply by 100 to get percentage.
