Chapter 11 Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is the Drive Theory?
Humans are motivated to reduce drives that make us uncomfortable.
Ex: Eating to reduce Hunger
What is Drive?
Tense states related to a physical need such as hunger or thirst.
What is Motivation?
The Need or Desire that Energizes, directs, or sustains behavior
What are the five perspectives for understanding Motivation?
Instinct Theory
Drive Theory
Incentive Theory
Arousal Theory
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs
What is Instinct Theory?
Genetically Predisposed behaviors
What is incentive Theory?
Responses toenvironmental stimuli
What is Arousal Theory
Right levels of stimulation?
What is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?
Priority of some needs over others
What is a example of Instinct Theory?
Reflexes
Fixed Action Patterns
What is a example of incentive theory?
Working Hard to Get paid
What is a example of Arousal Theory?
Being Curious
Seeking New Sensations
Beating Boredom
What is a example of Hierarchy of needs theory?
Self Actualization: Living up to our full potential is above all our other needs.
What is Emotion?
- A combination of bodily arousal, expressive behaviors, and conscious
experience that occurs in response to environmental stimuli
How is Emotion different from mood?
- Mood is a more general, diffuse, and long-lasting emotional state
What are the Three Components of Emotion
Physiology
Behavior
Cognition
What is Examples of Physiology?
Heartbeat, sweating, shaking, freezing, blood rush
What is Examples of Behavior?
- Running away, laughing, smiling
What is Examples of Cognition?
- Cognition
- Thoughts such as “that man is going to attack me”, or “my life is over”, or “I
am so lucky!”
What are the different theories of emotion?
- The James-Lange Theory
- The Cannon-Bard Theory
- The Schachter-Singer Two Factor Theory
- Lazarus Theory of Emotion
What two Major Questions to Emotion Theories look to answer?
- Does physiological arousal come before or after emotional feelings?
- How do feeling and thinking (cognition) interact?
What is the James Lange Theory?
Physical Arousal Leads to Subjective Feelings
Ex:
You See a bear
Your Heart Pounds
Your Afraid
What is the Cannon-Bard Theory?
Simultaneous and independent occurrence of physical sensations and
subjective feelings during an emotional experience
EX:
You See a Bear
Your Heart Rate Quickens and you have the emotion of fear the same time
What is The Schachter-Singer Two Factor Theory?
When we are aroused, we identify the source of arousal and assess
situation, then identify the feeling
EX:
You See a Bear
Heart Rate Quickens
Realize your afraid
What is the Lazarous Theory of Emotion
Cognitive labeling comes first, then followed by physiological arousal
and subjective feelings simultaneously
EX:
You see a bear
You understand thats something to be afraid of
At the same time you get scared and your heartbeat quickens
