Chapter 11: Hydration | Lesson 3: Developing Hydration Strategies Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
What is the clinical description of dehydration?
A
It is not by total body water, but by plasma osmolality or sodium concentrations that determines a persons hydration state.
2
Q
How is hydration status described out in the field?
A
In the field, hydration status is determined by total body water alterations.
3
Q
What is exercise associated hyponatremia (EAH)?
A
A potentially serious issue where the plasma sodium levels fall beneath 135mmol/L. This happens usually due to the over ingestion of fluids and lack of sweating during prolonged activity.
4
Q
What are symptoms of EAH?
A
- blood flow to the kidneys is greatly reduced which results in a reduction of flood excretion.
- Seizures
- Weakness
- Cramping
- Vomiting
- Disorientation
- Confusion
- In extreme cases, the influx of fluid to the ICF space can lead to brain stem cells rupturing. This can cause a coma or death.
