What is the function of the male reproductive system ?
To produce and deliver the sperm into the female reproductive system
What does the urethra do ?
tube through which the sperm leave the penis
What does the penis do ?
organ that introduces sperm into the vagina
What does the scrotum do ?
sac that holds the testes at slightly lower than body temp
What does the prostate gland do ?
adds fluid to nourish the sperm
What does the sperm tube to ?
carries the sperm from the testes to the urethra
What do the testes do ?
produce sperm
What does the cervix do ?
the opening of the uterus, widens during birth
What does the vagina do ?
the penis places sperm here
What does the oviduct do ?
carries the eggs to the uterus, fertilisation takes place here
What does the uterus do ?
will nourish the developing foetus
How are sperm cells adapted to their function ?
- They have a flagellum for swimming
- They are haploid
- have mitochondria for energy production
By what process are sperm cells formed ?
Meisos
Where does fertilisation take place and what happens ?
Oviducts, the haploid sperm and egg fuse to give a diploid zygote
How does the zygote divide and where does it travel to ?
It divides by mitosis and it travels to the uterus
What happens the embryo implants itself into the uterus ?
It differentiates to produce a variety of tissues and organs
How is the placenta adapted for diffusion ?
- It has a large surface area
- small villi increase the SA
What does the umbilical artery carry ?
CO2 and other wastes back to the mother
What does the umbilical vein carry ?
oxygen, glucose , amino acids and other nutrients to the foetus
What is the purpose of the amnion and the amniotic fluid ?
To cushion and protect the foetus
What is the male sex hormone and where is it produced ?
Testosterone and in the testes
What is the female sex hormone and where is it produced ?
oestrogen and in the ovaries
Name 3 secondary sexual characteristics in men :
- sexual organs enlarge
- body becomes more muscular
- voice deepens
Name 3 secondary sexual characteristics in women :
- hips widen
- menstruation begins
- breasts develop
