Chapter 12 Molecular Biology Of The Gene Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is DNA?
DNA is the molecule that carries genetic information.
What are nucleotides?
Nucleotides are the building blocks of DNA.
What are the 4 nitrogenous bases in DNA?
Adenine, Thymine, Guanine, and Cytosine.
What is the shape of DNA?
DNA is shaped like a double helix.
What does ‘complementary base pairs’ mean?
A pairs with T, and G pairs with C.
What is the sugar-phosphate backbone?
It’s the outer part of DNA made of sugar and phosphate.
What does DNA helicase do?
It unzips the DNA strand.
What does DNA polymerase do?
It builds the new strand of DNA.
What does DNA primase do?
It helps start the new DNA strand.
What does DNA ligase do?
It joins pieces of DNA together.
What is DNA replication?
It’s how DNA copies itself.
What is mRNA?
mRNA carries DNA’s message to the ribosome.
What is tRNA?
tRNA brings amino acids to the ribosome.
What is rRNA?
rRNA helps make up the ribosome.
What is transcription?
Transcription is making mRNA from DNA.
What is translation?
Translation is making a protein from mRNA.
What is a codon?
A codon is 3 bases on mRNA that code for an amino acid.
What is an anticodon?
An anticodon is 3 bases on tRNA that match the codon.
What is an exon?
Exons are coding parts of RNA.
What is an intron?
Introns are non-coding parts of RNA.
What does RNA polymerase do?
It builds RNA from DNA.
What is the promoter?
It’s the DNA section where RNA polymerase starts.
What are the stages of transcription?
Initiation, Elongation, Termination.
What is a polypeptide?
It’s a chain of amino acids that becomes a protein.
