What is the Social Psychology ?
The study of how people influence others’ behaviours, beliefs, and attitudes
What is mass hysteria ?
A contagious outbreak of irrational behaviour
What is attribution ?
Refers to the process of assigning cause to behaviour
What is conformity ?
The tendency to alter our behaviour as a result of group pressure
What is deindividuation ?
The tendency to engage in atypical behaviour when stripped of your usual identity
What is groupthink ?
An emphasis on group unanimity at the expense of critical thinking
What are cults ?
Groups that exhibit intense and unquestioning devotion to a single cause
What is obedience ?
Adherence to orders from those of higher authority
What is prosocial behaviour ?
Behaviour intended to help others
What is antisocial behaviour ?
Includes aggresive acts
What is bystander nonintervention ?
When people see someone in need but fail to help them
What is pluralistic ignorance ?
Error of assuming that no one in a group perceives things as we do
What is diffusion of responsibility ?
Reduction in feelings of personal responsibility in the presence of others
What is social loafing ?
When people slack off in groups
What is the enlightment effect ?
Exposure to reasearch
What is aggression ?
Behaviour intended to harm, either physically or verbally
What is relational aggresion ?
Form of indirect aggresion involving spreading rumours, gossiping, and nonverbal putdowns for the purpose of social manipulation
What is an attitude ?
A beleif that includes an emotional component
What is cognitive dissonance ?
An unpleasant state of tension b/w two opposing thoughts
What is the self-perception theory ?
Proposes that we acquire our attitudes by observing our behaviours
What is the impression management theory ?
Proposes that we don’t really change our attitudes, but report that we have changed them
What is Foot-in-the-Door ?
Starts with a small request and moves to a larger one
What is Door-in-the-face ?
Starts big but then backs off
What is the low-ball technique ?
Starts with a low price, then “adds on” all the desireable options
