what is Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE)?
It is a fatal contagious disease that has a degenerative process that gives the brain a sponge-like or Swiss cheese-like appearance.
what causes Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE)?
It is caused by simple proteins called prions, which are found in the neural membrane.
what is the most common degenerative diseases?
Parkinson’s disease
what causes Parkinson’s disease?
caused by degeneration of the nigrostriatal system
what are symptoms of Parkinson’s disease?
Primary symptoms include rigid muscles, slowness of movement, a resting tremor and postural instability.
what is the treatment of Parkinson’s disease?
L-Dopa is usually the drug given
what causes Huntington’s disease?
this is caused by degeneration of the caudate nucleus and putamen
what degeneration happens in Alzheimers disease?
degeneration of the hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, neocortex, nucleus basalis, etc
what is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?
it attacks spinal cord and cranial nerve motor neurons
