Flashcards in Chapter 15: Freshwater Systems and Resources Deck (22):
1

Aquifers

Porous, sponge-like formations of rock, sand, or gravel that hold water

2

Zone of aeration vs zone of saturation

Aeration has pores w some water, zone of saturation full of it

3

Water table

Boundary between Zones of aeration and saturation

4

Confined Aquifer

Water-bearing layer of rock trapped between layers of less permeable substrates

5

Unconfined aquifer

No impermeable upper layer

6

Tributary

Smaller river flowing into larger one

7

Watershed/drainage basin

Areas of land drained by a river system

8

Braided river

Steeply sloped region and carries lots of sediments flowing as interconnected series

9

Meandering River

Fore of water rounding a bend gradually eats outer shore, sediment deposited along inside of bend

10

Floodplain

Area near rivers course flood periodically, very fertile

11

Littoral zone

nutrient rich edges of water body where shallow enough for plants to grow in water but sprout above

12

Benthic zone

Shore to deepest point

13

Limnetic zone

Sunlight able to penetrate/be used by animals

14

Profundal zone

No sunlight reaching

15

Oligotrophic

Low nutrient, high oxygen

16

Eutrophic

High nutrient, low oxygen

17

Wetlands

Soil is saturated with water and hsas shallow sstanding water with ample vegetation

18

Freshwater marges

Plants grow above water surface

19

Swamps

Same as marsh, except in forested areas

20

Bogs

Thick, floating mats of vegetation

21

Vernal pools

Seasonal wetland

22

Water mining

Withdrawing water faster than it can be replenished
