Chapter 15 Population Dynamics Flashcards
(9 cards)
What can be used to describe the number of individuals in a population? Name only two
Scarce-rare, infrequent, frequent, abundant
What is a population?
A population is a group of organisms or species that associate with each other
What is needed to understand the abundance or density of a population?
There needs to be a total count or total census
What are the names of proportion in age?
Pre-reproductive, reproductive, post-productive
What does sampling by quadrants mean?
Quadrats are measured as a square and used as an estimate of the total population
What does sampling by transect mean?
Transects, along a line measure a population through changes in vegetation or landforms
What does sampling by Capture-recapture mean?
The capture-recapture technique is when a member of a species is caught and marked. When it is let out and come back, results can be made on how many there are in an ecosystem
Population Dynamics are influenced by?
Birth rate(how many are born), death rate(how many die) and migration rate( immigration and emigration)
Exponential growth is shown by the different phases of a population. What are they?
Lag phase(when a population size is small), acceleration phase(population increases sharply), and deceleration phase(when a population has finally reached the carrying capacity)
