Uses learning and conditioning to change maladaptive behavior
Behavior therapy techniques
Systematic desensitization (reduces phobic responses), aversion therapy (negative response to a stimulus), and social skills training
Antianxiety drugs
Reduce anxiety; lasts for a couple hours and can cause troublesome side effects
Antipsychotic drugs
Reduces effects of severe mood disorders; work gradually; bad side effects and patients often relapse without the drugs; can cause tardive dyskinesia which causes tics
Antidepressant drugs
Elevates mood; works gradually
Mood stabilizers
Controls mood swings in people with bipolar disorder; side effects can be lethal if not watched carefully
