Chapter 16: Final Approach Flashcards

1
Q

When does final begin for a precision vs non-precision approach?

A

Precision: glideslope intercept

Non-precision: FAF (maltese cross on plate)

Q

What is the VDP?

A

Visual descent point. It is a point from which a stabilized descent can be made from MDA to runway touchdown point. They are not a mandatory part of the procedure.

Q

What should you do if flying to higher mins than what is published or no VDP is published?

A

Calculate your own. If no VDP is published, be cautious as an obstacle may be a factor for a descent to the runway.

Q

How do you calculate the VDP?

Q

When should continuous descent final approach (CDFA) be flown?

A

When practicable, especially in ICAO. EU it is required or else approach weather mins will be higher.

Q

How do you calculate a CDFA?

A

Go to the table in the Legend where compare groundspeed to descent angle for desired VVI/descent rate. Then find altitude to lose from FAF altitude - (TCH+TDZE/THRE). Then divide that by the descent gradient you found to find the “FAF” for the CDFA, NM from runway to start the descent on that descent gradient/VVI down to the MDA.
Do not go below the MDA even when executing a missed approach. Use padding with a calculated altitude 50’ above MDA as a guide for when to start going missed so don’t go below MDA.

Q

Do not descend below 100’ above TDZE using approach lights as a reference unless what?

A

Have the red side row bars or red terminating bars visible and identifiable

Q

When must you use timing on an approach?

A

Only when DME is gone or have no other way to ID MAP but timing. It’s a backup.

Q

When do you need a vector back to final or must discontinue the approach on a LOC/ILS?

A

If exceed full scale deflection (outside 2 dots). Can request a vector back to intercept from ATC if prior to FAF/gs intercept

Q

When flying a LOC BC (backcourse) what course should you set in?

A

The published front course (this is the smaller number associated with the feather).

Q

When flying an ILS, when must you switch to LOC mins?

A

If aircraft is more than one dot below or two dots above the glideslope. If reintercept the glideslope prior to MDA can continue down to ILS mins.
