Chapter 17-harmonic Sequences Flashcards
(6 cards)
Writing Sequences guidelines
Guideline 1: The voice leading in the model and first copy must be correct. Because the copies merely restate the model (at a different pitch level), any faulty voice leading in the opening will blemish every copy.
Guideline 2: Write outer voices first. Try to incorporate contrary step motion between them and include at least one imperfect consonance.
Guideline 3: Prepare and resolve each chordal seventh.
Guideline 4: When you write Sequences involving inverted seventh chords, make sure each sonority is complete.
Rules for 7th chords in sequences
They must be prepared and resolved if they are used. Similar to the rules of suspensions.
Types of Sequences
Descending second, descending-third, ascending second,
Two parts of a sequence
Model and copy
Model
The initial pair of chords that form the basis for sequential repetition.
Copy
The repetition of the two-chord model in a harmonic sequence at a given ascending or descending interval.
