Chapter 18 Flashcards
(32 cards)
Central Nervous System
Brain and Spinal Cord
Peripheral Nervous System
Periphery or outer region
Afferent Division
Incoming sensory or afferent pathways (carry toward)
Efferent Division
Outgoing motor or efferent pathways (carry away)
Somatic Nervous System (SNS)
Somatic effectors, which are the skeletal muscles
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Carry information to the autonomic, or visceral, effectors (smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, glands, adipose tissue, and other involuntary tissue)
Divided into sympathetic division & parasympathetic division
Enteric Nervous System (ENS)
Second brain in the wall of the gut
Astrocytes
Star shaped
Create blood brain barrier (BBB)
Microglia
Destroy micrograms and cellular debris in the brain
Ependymal Cells
Forming thin sheet that line fluid filled cavities in the brain and spinal cord (cerebral spinal fluid)
Oligodendrocytes
Produce the fatty myelin sheath
Permits rapid conduction of nerve impulses
Schwann Cells
Supporting nerve fibers
Forming myelin sheath around them
Node of Ranvier
Simply myelin sheath gaps
Myelinated Fibers
White fibers
Unmyelinated Fibers
Gray fibers
Cell Body
Two process: one axon & one/more dendrites
Contains a nucleus, cytoplasm, and various organelles (Ex. mitochondria and Golgi apparatus)
Dendrites
Receive information
Axon
Carry out information
Multipolar Neurons
One axon and several dendrites
Bipolar Neuron
One axon & one highly branched dendrite
Unipolar Neurons
A.k.a. pseudounipolar neurons
Single process extending from the cell body
Afferent Neurons
A.k.a sensory neutrons
Carry impulses towards brain and spinal cord
Efferent Neurons
A.k.a motor neurons
Carry impulses away from brain and spinal cord
Interneurons
Conduct impulses from afferent neurons to or towards efferent neurons
In between the two
