Q

What is the formula for calculating the degree of unsaturation from molecular formula?

A

DOU = ((2C+2) - (# of H) + Group 5 - Group 7 ) /2

Add 1H for group 5 like N as they make 3 bonds- 1 in place of H that should have initially been there plus and extra H, which would look like CH-NH2

Remove 1H for group 7. As they form a single bond like Cl

Q

How does mass spectrometry work?

A

1) molecules are ionized (made into charged species) and fragments

2) Ions are separated based on mass depending on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z)
