Chapter 2 Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is an atom made of?
protons, neutrons and electrons
What is a molecule made of?
Atoms that held together by chemical bonds
Know the two major types of chemical bonds discussed in class:
- Ionic Bond
2. Covalent Bond
How Does an Ionic Bond Work?
An ionic bond is when electrons are completely transferred from one atom to another and then the atoms are attracted to each other because one is positive and one is negative. (Cations are attracted to Anions)
How Does a Covalent Bond Work?
A Covalent bond occurs when atoms share electrons through their valence shells
What is the Basic scheme of a chemical reaction?
New bonds form between atoms or existing bonds break
What are reactants?
Substances that start a chemical reaction Example: (egg, butter, flour, milk)
What are products?
Substances that are produced in the reaction (cake)
Know the two types of chemical reactions discussed in class
- Decomposition
2. Synthesis
How Does Decomposition Work?
By breaking a larger molecule into smaller fragments
How Does Synthesis Work?
Combining atoms to build larger products. (opposite of decomposition)
What are Enzymes?
Functional proteins that help chemical reactions happen and give them the boost they need. They are catalysts. Fuel to the fire.
How do Enzymes Work?
Increase the rate of a chemical reaction.
What 4 Qualities Make Water Special?
- Lubrication in body cavities and between joint surfaces
- Reactivity (chemical reactions can occur in water)
- High heat capacity (can absorb and retain heat)
- Solubility (many substances can dissolve in water)
What is a Solution?
When the solute and solvent are mixed together (kool-aid)
What is a Solute?
The substance to be dissolved
EX: (dry packet of kool-aid mix)
What is a Solvent?
The substance doing the dissolving
typically water
What Are Electrolytes?
A soluble (able to be dissolved) compound whose ions conduct an electrical current in solution
Hydrophilic
Water loving. A Substance that tends to mix with water.
EX: (phosphate head on a phospholipid)
Hydrophobic
Water fearing. A substance repels are fails to mix with water
EX: (hydrophobic tail on a phospholipid)
pH Correspondence
- Low pH (less than 7): Acidic
- 7 = Neutral
- High pH (above 7): Basic/Alkaline
Low pH is_____.
Acidic/Less Than 7
High pH is ______.
Basic/Alkaline/Greater Than 7
Neutral pH is __.
7
