15
Q

How many phases are in each mixture?

A

Homogeneous mixtures consist of one phase, heterogeneous mixtures consist of two or more (layers)

16
Q

How can mixtures be separated?

A

Differences in physical properties can be used to separate mixtures

17
Q

Describe the process of distillation

A

As a homogeneous mixture is heated, water vapor rises and passes into a tube surrounded by cold water. This cold water cools down the vapor and turns it into distilled water while the non-water particles stay in the distillation flask

18
Q

What is a chemical change?

A

A change that produces matter with a different compostition

19
Q

How can substance and mixtures be distinguished?

A

If the composition of a material is fixed, it is a substance. If the compositions may vary it is a mixture.

20
Q

What are periods and groups on the period table?

A

A period (properties vary) is a horizontal row of elements while a group (similar chem and physical properties) is a vertical row

21
Q

What always happens during a chemical change?

A

The composition of matter always changes

22
Q

What are the four possible clues a chemical change occurred?

A
  • transfer of energy
  • change in color
  • production of gas
  • formation of a precipitate
23
Q

How are the mass of the reactants and of the products related?

A

During any chemical reaction, the mass of the products is always equal to the mass of the reactants

24
Q

What is the law of conservation of mass?

A

In any physical change or chemical reaction, mass is conserved, mass can be neither created nor destroyed
