chapter 2 - chemistry and matter Flashcards
(39 cards)
chemistry is the science that:
deals with structure and composition of substances
matter is:
anything that has mass and takes up space
mass is:
the amount of matter in an object
(SI units = grams)
pure substance:
any matter that has a fixed composition and definite properties (H20, Cl2, C6H1206)
elements:
simplest form of matter,, composed of only 1 type of atom, cannot be broken down by chemical or physical means
molecule:
smallest unit of a substance that exhibits all the properties characteristic of that substance
compounds:
two or more elements bound together chemically, can be broken down into similar component elements
chemical symbols:
they consist of 1 or 2 letters, first letter is capitalized
chemical formulas
combination of symbols
mixture
a combination of more than one pure substance in which the composition is not fixed
heterogenous mixture:
not evenly mixed
homogenous mixture:
evenly mixed
solutions:
homogenous mixture, small particles, dont separate
suspensions:
heterogenous mixture, separates into layers, cloudy
colloids
heterogenous, contains intermediate particles
miscible
2 or more fluids that can dissolve into each other
immiscible
not mixable
physical properties
they can be observed/measured without changing the chemical composition
extensive physical properties
dependent on the quantity of the sample
intensive physical properties
not dependent on the quantity of the sample (melting/freezing point)
melting point:
the temperature which a liquid becomes a solid
boiling point
the temperature which a liquid becomes a gas below the surface of a liquid
viscosity:
a liquid’s resistance to flow
conductivity
a material’s ability to allow heat to flow
