Chapter 2 - Naming Flashcards

(46 cards)

1
Q

What are the rules for Binary ionic compounds?

A

They are held together through opposite charges on the individual ions.

  1. Always put positive ion (the metal) first
  2. Name the positive ion (cation)
  3. For the Negative ion (anion), add “-ide” to the root of the name.

Q

What are the rules for binary ionic compounds containing metals having more than one common charge?

A
  1. Always put the positivley charged ion (the metal) first.
  2. Name the positive ion.
  3. Find the charge of the positive ion (remember that the salt is neutral, so positive and negative charges must cancel out.)
  4. Place it in parenthesis after the metal, using roman numerals.
  5. For the negative ion,add “-ide” to the root of the name.

Ex. CuCl: Copper (I) Chloride
CuCl2: Copper (II) Chloride.

34
What are the rules for naming binary acids
Add "hydro" to the beginning of the root, and "-ic" to the end, and include the word "acid" Ex. HCl: Hydrochloric acid
35
What is the rule for naming Polyatomic acids?
- Find the name of the polyatomic anion. | - Change the name of the polyatomic anion from "-ate" to "-ic acid", or from "-ite" to "-ous acid"
36
What are the rules for naming Acid salts?
- Name the metal cation. - Name the hydrogen, along with a Greek prefix to show how many hydrogens are present (hydrogen, dihydrogen, trihydrogen...). - Name the anion Ex. NaHCO3: sodium hydrogen carbonate
37
How are Molecular compounds formed?
When two non metals (or a metalloid and a nonmetal) bond covalently. Ex. CO2: Carbon dioxide SF4: Sulfur Tetrafluoride
