Chapter 2 Notes: Flashcards
Building Plans Overview:
- Plans are drawings showing materials, sizes, locations, and construction features. Prepared by architect/engineer, understand structure.
Electrical Construction Specifications:
- Specifications provide details for all trade involved in construction, including material sizes, types, and qualities.
Electrical Symbols (1 of 3):
Electrical symbols show device locations. A device carries or controls electrical energy, while an outlet connects to the wiring system.
Electrical Symbols (2 of 3):
Lighting outlets connected to lamps, Split-wired receptacles, and junction boxes are used for estimating costs.
Luminaries and Outlets:
Luminaries are complete lighting units with a light source and parts. Outlet locations depend on illumination type.
Outlet, Device, and Junction Boxes (1 of 2):
NEC Article 314 specifies details for outlet and pull junction boxes. Boxes must be securely mounted.
Nonmetallic Outlet and Device Boxes:
Nonmetallic boxes are commonly used in homes for their cost efficiency and circuit connectivity.
Gang Switch (Device) Boxes:
Multiple gang boxes are used for installing several devices in one location, available in 2, 3, or 4-gangs.
Box Mounting (4 of 5)
Fire spread must be contained, and NEC and building codes should be followed for fire-resistance ratings.
Box Mounting (2 of 5)
Consider damage control when wiring. Properly locate remodel boxers to prevent damage to wires.
Boxes for Conduit Wiring
Metal raceways may require 4-inch square boxes, with plaster covers to close gaps around boxes.
Yoke
Yokes are metal or polycarbonate mounting straps. They attach devices to boxes with screws.
Special-Purpose Outlets
.Special outlets are marked on plans, including unique circuits or receptacles like 240V or polarized types.
Number of Conductors in a Box
NEC 314.16(A) specifies the maximum number of conductors in metal boxes. Volume allowance depends on wire sizes.
Selecting the Correct Size Box (1 of 2)
Box size depends on the conductors and devices inside. Check NEC 314.16(A) for size requirements.
Selecting the Correct Size Box (2 of 2)
Each metal box must have a grounding connection, such as a tapped hole for equipment grounding.
Height of Receptacle Outlets
Electricians consult the plans and specifications for mounting heights.
Positioning of Receptacles
NEC doesn’t specify receptacle positioning. Grounding slots should be at the top for safety.
