(19 cards)
Medulla
essential body functions; heartbeat, breathing.
Pons
sleep and dreaming.
Reticular Formation
arousal and consciousness.
Cerebellum
coordination of movements, sense of balance and motor learning.
Thalamus
Sensory info to other parts of the brain.
Basal Ganglia
Involved in initiation and execution of movements.
Limbic System
survival, memory and emotions.
Hypothalamus
Involved in eating, drinking, and having sex.
Hippocampus

Cerebral Cortex
The layers covering the brains two hemispheres.
Corpus callosum
The bridge of neurons that connects the two cerebral hemispheres.
Frontal Lobe
In the front of the central fissure and above the lateral fissure. The motor cortex is in this lobe.
Allows us to move different parts of the body.
Parietal Lobe
In the back of he central fissure and above the lateral fissure. The somatosensory cortex is in this lobe.
Sensations such as touch, temperature, limb position and pain.
Temporal Lobe
The area located in each cerebral hemisphere located beneath the lateral fissure. The primary auditory cortex is in this lobe.
Primary visual cortex where visual info is processed.
Occipital Lobe
The are located in the lower back of each cerebral hemisphere. The primary visual cortex is in this lobe.
Includes primary visual cortex where visual sensory info is initially processed.
Broca’s Area
fluent speech.
Wernicke’s Area
comprehension of speech and text.
REM (Rapid Eye Movement)
Heart rate rises, eyes move rapidly under eyelids.
