Ellipse
Shape of earths orbit
Axis
Imaginary vertical line that cuts through the center of the earth and around which earth spins
Equinox
Twice yearly time- spring and fall - the sub is directly above the equator, daylight and nighttime hours are equal
Full moon
Phase that occurs when all of the moons surface facing earth reflects light
Impact basin
A hollow left on the surface of the moon caused by an object striking it’s surface
Lunar eclipse
Occurs when earths shadow falls on the moon
Maria
Dark, flat regions on the moon formed when ancient lava reached the surface and filled craters
Moon phase
Change in appearance of the moon as viewed from earth , due to the positions of the moon, earth, and sun
New moon
Moon phase that occurs when the moon is between the earth and sun , moon cannot be seen
Revolution
Earths yearlong elliptical orbit around the sun
Rotation
Spinning of earth on its axis, take about 24 hours - cause day and night
Solar eclipse
Occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and earth and casts a shadow over part of the earth, part of the sun is blocked out
Solstice
Twice yearly - summer and winter- the sun reaches it’s greatest distance north or south of the equator
Sphere
Round, 3- dimensional object
Waning
Describes phases that occur after a full moon
Waxing
Describes phases following a new moon
