Unit 2 bio Flashcards
(12 cards)
Mutation
Small random error in DNA
Migration
Seasonal movement of animals from one region to another
Natural selection
Process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive & reproduce
environment selecting organisms with best traits
Genetic drift
Vacation in the relative frequency of different genotype a in a small population owing to the chance disappearance of particular genes as individuals or do not reproduce
Artificial selection
Selection through selective breeding of plants and animals by humans
Adaption
A change or the process of change by which organisms or species becomes better suited to its environment
Evolution of whales
Most closely land mammal - hippos
Blowhole went to head, legs got shorter and evolved into fins
Started on land and evolved to water mammal
Speciation
The formation of a new species
Allopatric speciation
Geographic barriers separate members of a group causing them to evolve separately
Sympatric speciation
Occurs when a new species develops while sharing the same geographic area as its parent species
Fitness
How good a particular genotype is at leaving offspring in the next generation relative to how good other genotypes are at it
Evolution
Change in the genetic makeup of a population over time
