Chapter 25 Flashcards
Jane's dreams and Bertha and the veil
Upon closer inspection, what does the horse-chestnut tree look like? How is this symbolic?
“black and riven: the trunk, split down the centre… the firm base and strong roots kept them unsundered below”
How does Rochester lie to Jane about his arrangements?
“And on my part likewise… I have settled every-thing”
Jane is agitated, what does Rochester respond to her?
“This is hypochondria, Jane. You have been over-excited, or over-fatigued.”
What does Jane dream about (1)?
“I was burdened with the charge of a little child” - child could represent many things
What was Jane’s second dream?
“the child clung around my neck in terror, and almost strangled me.. the wall crumbled; I was shaken; the child rolled from my knee, I lost my balance, fell, and woke.”
What did Jane see in her room?
“a woman, tall and large, with thick and dark hair”
“fear and ghastly to me… it was a discoloured face - it was a savage face. I wish I could forget the roll of the red eyes”
“was purple: the lips were swelled and dark”
What did the visage do?
“took my veil… threw it over her own head… it removed my veil… rent it in two parts, and flinging both on the floor, trampled on them”
