What is Erikson’s generativity vs stagnation stage
Goal is to find meaning in contributing to the development of younger individuals.
Generativity is associated with:
Positive mental health due to intrinsic rewards and civic engagement.
Vailant’s Keeper of meaning stage:
After generativity vs stagnation stage where individuals focus on perserving institutions/ values of their culture.
Mid-life crisis:
When prespective changes from “time since birth” to “time left before death”. At about 40.
At a midlife crisis people will follow one of five of these stages:
- The meandering way
- The straight and narrow
- Downward slope
- Triumphant trail
- Authentic road
What is the life events approach?
Focuses on life events/ how adults deal with them.
Conflict between roles that have different behaviours/ demands, with not enough time to fulfill them:

Parental roles changing as children leave the home.

Adult children remaining at home/ coming back after living alone.
What are the 3 basic styles of grand parenting?
- Companionate: frequent/ warm interactions
- Remote: do not see often
- Involved: everyday care and close emotional ties.
What is having more friends and seeing friends more often associated with?
Increased psychological health and wellbeing.
What changes occur with the big 5 personality traits?
O, E, N decline.
A, C increase until 70 then decline.

What happens when career changes/ unemployment are involuntary vs voluntary?
Involuntary= increased mental/ physical illness, maritial problems(layoffs).
Voluntary= higher risk tolerance but can feel some of the negative effects.
Involuntary non-mobility:
When in a non preferred job with low enjoyabliliy, increases depressive symptoms and poor health.
Preperation for retirement:
Gradual reduction of workload.
What are the 5 types of people in retirement?
- Wealth builders
- Anxious idealists(give back, without resources to do so)
- Empowered trial blazers(travel)
- Stretched/stressed boomers(finacially troubled)
- liesure lifers.
