Chapter 27 Flashcards
(5 cards)
Overseas Expansion (Economic) 27-1
America wants to expand overseas, outside of just the U.S. because of its growing economy.
Reasons:
- Agricultural and Industrial production boom
- New sense of power due to wealth, population, and productive capacity
- Labor violence and farmer unrest (after Industrial Revolution); they thought that oversees market would be safer and less worrysome
Overseas Expansion (Social) 27-1
Americans wanted to become an Imperial Power (like many Europeans countries) for many social reasons.
Reasons:
- The “Yellow Press” by Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst fantasized foreign exploitation by man
- Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge interpreted Social Dariwinism as strong countries like the U.S. needed to take over other countries
- We wanted to civilize other “uncivilized” societies and peoples
- Europe had already taken over so much foreign land that the U.S. needed to act now to get what is left in order to become an imperial power
Development of the Navy 27-1
Americans began to take up the idea that navy power and sea control was crucial to world dominance
Big Sister Policy 27-1
Policy aimed at rallying Latin American nations behind American leadership and opening markets in Latin American countries for trade
Proposed by James G. Blaine
