what is stress
stress is a psychological and physiological response to stimulus (stressors)
what are the two types of stressors?
internal and external
what is an internal stressor
is a stimulus from within a persons body that prompts the stress response.
what does an internal stressor include
it includes the way we percieve different events that impacts our lives
how is attitude an internal stressor
as an internal negative attidute could make someone more likely to consider something outside of their ability to cope which could induce stress
is low self esteem another internal stressor

how is nervous system disfunction an internal stressor
the dysfunction of production of nerourtransmitter (GABA) can lead to the overexciation of other neurotranmmiters which can affect regulating stress
what are internal stressors
they are the cognotive and biological process that cause stress or infurlnce us to percive stimuli as being stressful
what is an external stressor
is a stimulis from outside of a persons body that come from interaction in the world that prompts the stress response
what are examples of external stressors
- test/exam
- financial issues
- meeting new ppl
do internal and external stressors work together to make someone feel stress
yes they can do as they can both contruibute to the expereince of stress
what is an example of both internal and external stressors contributing to the experince of stress
winnie has an exam approaching which is an external stressor causing her to experince stress however she also experinces an internal stressor through her low self esteem about completing the exam well. both internal and external stressors cause her to experience stress.
what does the psychological stress response relate to
it relates to how we think and feel about a stressor, that differs between different people
what is distress
it is a form of stress characheterised by a negative psychological state
when does distress occour
distress occours when a stressor presents an indivual with an undesirbale circumstance that leads to a negative outcome
what is eustress
eustress is a form of stress charcaterised by a positive psycholigcal state
when does eustress occour
eustress typically occours when the stressor provides an indiuvual with a positive oppoutunity of circumstance
do both forms of stress promote high performance?
yes they do however if distress becomes overwheling then performance may decrease
how does eustress and distress demonstate that stress is highly subjective
as different people may perceive an event/circumstance to be stressful however some can experience eustress caused by it, where others experince distress.
what does the phsyiological stress response relate to
it relates to how the body reacts to a stressor, which is commonly experinced in a similar wau between different people
what is acute stress
acute stress is intense psychological and physiological symptoms that are breif in duration
what does acute stress trigger
acute stress commonly triggers the flight-fight-freeze response, which is involunatry and automatic
what occours during FLIGHT
- organism flees from the stres
