Chapter 3 Flashcards
(10 cards)
The components of organic molecules that are most commonly involved in chemical reactions. The number and arrangement give each molecule unique properties.
Functional groups
Carbon containing compounds
Organic compound
(OH) helps in linking things together or making polymers
Hydroxyl
Has some effect on acids and bases. The pH of a solution. Forming bonds by adding hydrogen makes it basic, removing hydrogen makes it more acidic.
Carboxyl
Contains nitrogen. The building blocks of protein
Amine
Causes polarity in some molecules, it helps in solutions with dissolving things. (Carbon double bonded to an oxygen)
Carbonyl
Found in systine. These cause things to bend, such as curly hair.
Sulfhydryl
Phosphate groups are polar, making it hydrophilic. Phosphate functional groups make the heads of phospholipids hydrophilic, and the tails more hydrophobic.
Phosphate.
Can help to break down proteins. When we want to tag something with a protein, we can use it.
Menthyl
The energy of the cell. Water breaks it apart, and makes it an inorganic phosphate.
ATP Adenosine triphosphate
