1
Q

Epidermis

A

Constist of several layers of stratified squamous epithelium.

  • cells produced in basal layer
  • cells pushed up flattened, fill up w/ keratin & die

Q

Basal layer of epidermis Contains what cells?

A

Deepest layer of epidermis

Anhidrosis
Inability to sweat normally (inability to cool itself, overheating)
29
Ecchymosis
Bruise; a black and blue mark; a large purpura (Chymo=juice)
30
Nevus
Congenital malformation on the skin that can be epidermal or vascular Aka a mole
31
Verruca
An epidermal tumor caused by a papilloma virus Aka a wart
32
Erythema
Redness of skin
33
Pruritis
Severe itching
34
Suppuration
Production of purulent matter (pus)
35
Urticaria
Hives; an eruption of wheals on the skin accompanied by itching
36
Xeroderma
Dry skin
37
Dermatitis
Inflammation of the skin characterized by erythema, pruritus (itching), and various lesions
38
Burn
Injury to the body tissue caused by heat, chemical, electric, radiation, or gases
39
First degree burn
Burn involving only epidermis •characterized by erythema (redness) &; hyperesthesia (excessive sensation)
40
Second degree burn
Burn involving the epidermis and the dermis •Characterized by erythema, hyperesthesia, and vesications (blisters)
41
Third degree burn
Burn involving all layers of the skin •characterized by destruction of the epidermis and dermis, with damage or destruction of subcutaneus tissue
42
Gangrene
An eating sore; death of tissue associated with loss of blood supply
43
Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1)
Transient viral vesicles (cold sores or fever blisters) that infect that facial area, especially the mouth and nose (herpes= creeping skin disease)
44
Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2)
Sexually transmitted, ulcer-like lesions of the genital and arorectal skin and mucosa; after initial infection, the virus lies dormant in the nerve cell root and may recur at times of stress
45
HIV
Human Immunodeficiency Virus
46
Herpes Zoster
a viral disease affecting the peripheral nerves characterized by painful blisters that spread over the skin following affected nerves, usually unilateral; also known as shingles (zoster = girdle)
47
Lupus
a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation of various parts of the body (lupus=wolf)
48
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
a more severe form of lupus involving the skin, joints, and often vital organs (e.g., lungs or kidneys)
49
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
malignant tumor of the squamous epithelium
50
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
Malignant tumor of the basal layer of the epidermis; most common type of skin cancer
51
Malignant melanoma
Malignant tumor composed of melanocytes
52
Seborrhea
a skin condition marked by the hypersecretion of sebum from the sebaceous glands
53
Tinea
a group of fungal skin diseases identified by the body part affected, including tinea corporis (body), commonly called ringworm, and tinea pedis (foot), also called athlete's foot
54
Biopsy (Bx)
Removal of a small piece of tissue for microscopic pathologic examination
55
Electrocautery
Use of an instrument heated by electric current (cautery) to coagulate bleeding areas by burning the tissue (e.g., to sear a blood vessel)
56
Incision and drainage (I&D)
incision and drainage of an infected skin lesion (e.g. an abscess)
57
Chemotherapy
Treatment of malignancies, infections, and other diseases with chemical agents that destroy selected cells or impair their ability to reproduce
58
Anesthetic
a drug that temporarily blocks transmission of nerve conduction to produce a loss of sensations (e.g., pain)
