Chapter 3 Flashcards
(42 cards)
Germinal Stage
The period of prenatal development that takes place in the first two weeks after conception…
it includes the creation of the zygote and the attachment of the zygote to the uterine wall
Embryonic Stage
Process of cell division support systems and organs form
Endoderm
INNER LAYER of cells which will develop into the digestive and respiratory systems
Mesoderm
MIDDLE LAYER become the circulatory system, bone muscles and reproductive system
Ectoderm
OUTERMOST layer which is the nervous system brain sensory systems and skin
Amnion
Life support system that is a bag of clear fluid in which the developing embryo floats
Umbilical chord
Life support system containing 2 arteries and one vein that connects baby to placenta
Placenta
Life support system that consists of a disc shaped group of tissues in which small blood vessel’s from the mother and offspring intertwine
How does the placenta operate?
It provides oxygen and nutrients to the baby and removes waste products from the babies blood
How do molecules operate
Small molecules such as oxygen and water and food from the mothers blood it passed back-and-forth between the mother and the fetus
Fetal period
Lasting 7 months between the prenatal period 2 months after conception to birth
First trimester
First 3 months
The developing baby is an embryo. The digestive and nervous system is formed
Second trimester
Middle 3 months
Heartbeat is strong sucks thumb. Waste is collected
Third trimester
Last 3 months
Adding baby fat, responds to sound
Neural tube
Tube that forms the brain and spinal chord
Neurogenesis
Neurons cells are generated in the brain. Most active during prenatal development when the baby’s brain is being formed
Neuronal migration
6-24 weeks after conception the cells live outward and go to their appropriate locations of the brain
Neural tube closes during
Ectoderm
Failure of closing the neural tube
Spina bifida or anecephaly
Women can take vitamin B folic acid for prevention
Neural tube forms, then Neurogenesis beings then neuronal migration then the connections and functions
Neural tube forms, then Neurogenesis beings then neuronal migration then the connections and functions
Teratogens
Medication that cause birth defects
The time of dose and how much effects the baby lower or higher
The embryonic period is more vulnerable than the
Fetal period for teratogens
Pitocin
When dr breaks your water
First stage of birth
Contractions are 15 to 20 minutes apart and last up to a minute. The contractions cause the women’s cervix to stretch and open. Takes 6 to 12 hours. After the end of the first stage the cervix is dialated
Longest stage
