What is the self concept?
A relatively stable set of perceptions one holds of themselves.
What is self esteem?
The part of the self concept which evaluates self worth.
What is a reflected appraisal?
The process of mirroring the judgements of surrounding people.
What is a significant other?
A person who’s evaluations are especially influential.
What is social comparison?
The way we evaluate ourselves as compared to others or to reference groups of people.
What are 4 reasons we may view ourselves differently to how others view us?
- Obsolete information.
- Distorted feedback from others.
- Ignoring negative qualities.
- We may view ourselves more harshly.
What is cognitive conservatism?
The tendency to resist revision of our self concept and seeking information that confirms an existing self concept.
What are the two types of self fulfilling prophecies?
- Self imposed prophecies - when your expectations influence your behavior.
- Other-imposed prophecies - when one person’s expectations influence another’s actions.
What is self disclosure?
Information about the self deliberately shared with another person.
What are 7 factors of self disclosure which, taken together, distinguish it from other types of communication?
- Self as the subject.
- Is intentional.
- Is directed at another person.
- Is honest.
- Is revealing.
- Contains information generally unavailable elsewhere.
- Gains much of its intimate nature from the context in which its expressed.

- Is the other person important to you? - Disclosure may strengthen the relationship.
- Is the risk of disclosing reasonable?
- Is the self disclosure appropriate?
- Is the disclosure reciprocated?
- Will the effect be constructive?
What are 5 alternatives to self disclosure?
- Silence.
- Lying - benevolent or malicious.
- Equivocation (statements not literally false, but dance around an unpleasant truth).
- Hinting - seeking a desired response.
- Ethical evasion - circumstances where hints, benevolent lies and equivocation may be more ethical than self disclosure.
