Chapter 3 Atomic Structure Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are atoms?
Are the smallest particle that can still have the chemical characteristics of an element
What are the subatomic particles?
Proton, neutron, electron
Charge and relative mass of the subatomic particles?
Proton (+1, 1), neutron (0, 1), electron (-1, 1/1840 which is negligible )
What is proton number?
Number of protons in an atom’s nucleus
What is Nucleon number?
Total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
What is an ion?
- It Is the particle formed when an atom or group of atoms gains or loses electrons but the number of protons and neutrons remains the same
- charged particles
What are isotopes?
They are atoms of the same element that have the same proton number but different nucleon(mass) number. (Essentially different number of neutrons)
What about the groups in the periodic table?
- elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons (similar chemical reactions)
What about the periods in the periodic table?
The elements in the same period have the same number of electron shells
