Chapter 4&5 Metals, Alloys And Macromolecules Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What is the arrangement & structure of metals? How does it affect them?
A
- have a regular arrangement or layers of atoms.
- in a giant metallic lattice structure held together by positive [metal] ions in a sea of delocalised mobile electrons
- layers of atoms slide past one another easily
- malleable and ductile
2
Q
What is metallic bond?
A
It is the mutual electrostatic attraction between positively charged ions in a metal and the sea of delocalised mobile electrons
3
Q
What about alloys?
A
- is the mixture of a metal with one or more other elements
- different sizes, disrupts the regular lattice arrangement of pure metals
- stronger and harder than pure metals
4
Q
What are macromolecules?
A
They are polymers, made up of covalent substances joined together into chains of much larger molecules
5
Q
Characteristics of macromolecules?
A
- They vary in hardness and flexibility
- Do not have a fixed melting or boiling point
- soften over a range of temperatures when weak intermolecular forces are overcome by the molecular vibration with high kinetic energy
- insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvent
- do not conduct electricity
