Chapter 3 Cards Flashcards
(4 cards)
Saturated
A hydrocarbons with no double or triple bonds. It is called saturated because it has the max number of bonded hydrogens.
Methylene Group
-CH2-
Homologs
Two compounds that differ only by one or more -CH2- group.
What are the 4 rules to naming compounds?
1)The main chain:give the base name of the compound (when there are two chains of equal lengths, choose the one with the most substituents on the chain)
2) Numbering the main chain: Assign a number to each carbon atom on the main chain to give locations of the substituents.
3) Naming the alkyl group: Name the substituents groups attached to the longest chain as alkyl groups. Give the location of each alkyl group by the number of the main-chain carbon atom to which it is attached to.
4) Organizing multiple groups: When 2 or more substituents are present, list them in alphabetical order. When two or more of the same alkyl substituent are present, use the prefixes di-, tri-, tetra-, etc. Include a position number of each substituent even if it is repeated.
