chapter 3 test Flashcards
(39 cards)
how can you describe the motion of particles in a solid?
the particles in a solid are closely locked in position and can only vibrate.
what are crystalline solids?
solids that are made up of crystals are called crystalline solids
what are amorphous solids?
The particles are not arranged in a regular pattern.
what is a liquid?
A liquid has a definite volume but no shape of its own.
how can you describe the motion of particles in a liquid?
compared to the particles in a solid, the particles in a liquid I’m more loosely connected and collide with and move past one another.
what is a fluid?
substance that easily flows.
what is surface tension?
surface tension is the result of an inward to pull among the molecules of a liquid that brings the molecules on the surface closer together.
what is viscosity?
liquids resistance to flowing.
how can you describe the motion in gases?
in gases the atoms and molecules are free to move independently colliding frequently
what is melting?
The in a state from a solid to a liquid
what is the melting point?
The temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid
what types of measurements are useful in working with gases?
when working with the gas, it is helpful to know its volume, temperature, and pressure.
what is freezing?
change from liquid to a solid is freezing. it is the reverse of melting.
how are the volume, temperature, and pressure of a gas related?
when the temperature of a gas is increased at a constant pressure, it’s a boy and increases. When the temperature of a gas is decreased at constant pressure, it’s volume decreases.
what is vaporization?
change from a liquid to gas
what is evaporation?
vaporization takes place only on the surface of a liquid.
what is boiling?
boiling occurs when a liquid changes to a gas below its surface as well as at the surface.
what is the boiling point?
The temperature at which a liquid boils.
what is condensation
The change in state from a gas to liquid.
what is sublimation?
sublimation occurs when the surface particles of a solid date enough energy that they form a gas
what is a solid?
A solid has a definite shape and definite volume.
what is pressure?
The pressure of a gas is the force of its outward push divided by the area of the walls of the container
what is directly proportional?
when a graphic to variables is a straight line passing through the origin, graphs are directly proportional to each other
what is inversely proportional?
when the product at two variables is constant, variables are inversely proportional to each other.
