Chapter 4 Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is an Alkene?
Alkenes are unsaturated hydro carbon molecules containing carbon double bonds.
General formula - CnH2n for a straight chain molecule
Nomanclature is the same for Alkenes - Except for 1) & 2)
1) The suffix ‘ene’ is replaced with ‘ane’
2) The double bond is numbered in the molecule. Trying to get the smallest number for the double bonds.
Alkyl Groups
A functional group of an organic compound - that contains only carbon + hydrogen atoms.
Which are arranged in chains
Diene
Conjugated Diene
An alkene with two double bonds.
(Think man falling)
A diene with a single bond between the double is a conjugate diene.
A nucleophile
A molecule with a free pair of electrons + sometimes a negative charge that seeks out partially or completely positive charge species
Morkovnikoffs Rule
The nucleophile will be bounded to the most substituted carbon. (Fewest hydrogens attached)
Equivalently the electrophilic will be bonded to the least substituted carbon. (Most hydrogens attached)
Oxidation
Related to this chapter
Alkenes can undergo a variety of reactions in which the carbon carbon double bond is oxidised.
