Code of ethics
Voluntary standards of behaviour established by a profession.
Laws
Minimum standards of behaviour established and influenced by statutes, legislatures and court decisions
Due care
Is the term meaning proper and sufficient care or the absence or negligence
Expressed contracts
Are established through the written word or verbal contract
Abandonment
Refers to the discontinuation of care after treatment has begun but not yet completed
Tort
Is a wrongful act that results in injury to one person by another, intentionally or accidental
Four D’s
All must be preset for a malpractice lawsuit to be successful
Referral
Done when a dentist feels a patient has a condition beyond their scope of training
Res ispa loquitur
The act speaks for itself
Respondeat superior

Direct supervision
Dentist is physically watching you or in building
Indirect supervision
Dentist doesn’t have to be in the building at all

Contributing to problem ( patients can do this sometimes)

To protect the public from unqualified or incompetent practitioners.
